Exploring Switzerland's major cities and villages
The purpose of visiting Switzerland was never to visit the cities. However, Zürich and Bern were very nice. While my time in the cities was limited, I certainly enjoyed my time in both of Switzerland’s major cities. As usual, and this applies to Switzerland in general: the country is incredibly well connected with rail. I found it really easy to hop on a train and be in the next major city in a very short time.
Exploring Switzerland's major cities
Zurich was my favorite city in Switzerland and also the city I spent the most time in. Admittedly, I didn’t spend the necessary time to adequately comment on the city, which is why all of thoughts on the cities are very brief. I liked Zurich over the rest of the major cities, mostly because of the number of shops available. Zurich is great and is more practical to fly into.
Lucerne wasn’t a city I was going to visit on my trip to Switzerland. However, I had a lot of time after taking care of my covid test and it made sense to visit Lucerne, even for a few hours. My time in Lucerne was very limited, so take my thoughts with a pinch of salt.
It wasn’t my favorite city in Switzerland. It felt too touristy, and yes I am a tourist myself but it was very crowded. From my limited time in Lucerne, it felt like the place where people visit, take photos and leave — which admittedly is exactly what I did.
You will see a pattern with my brief writings about the cities in Switzerland. I was in Bern for about 24 hours, which is admittedly a very short amount of time for a vibrant city like Bern. Because of this reality, I’m leaving my impressions short. I liked Bern but I wish I had more time in Bern. Bern is the capital city of Switzerland and it surely has a lot to offer.
I can speak with more detail about the villages in Switzerland, especially Grindelwald and Zermatt, where I spent the majority of my time. Grindelwald was great, it’s a small village that has everything you need for your hiking trip. However, restaurants in Grindelwald are not great. If you click through the photo-story where I write about my business class travels, I listed all of my expenses and the list for restaurants was small. I found food to be mediocre in Grindelwald and a bit better in Zermatt but never amazing.
I was in Zermatt for a few days and Zermatt is bigger than Grindelwald and has a lot more to offer. For one, the restaurants are a lot better than in Grindelwald and there are more of them. While Zermatt is bigger than Grindelwald, it’s still small enough that you can walk anywhere, which is something I personally like.
